I struggled finding the correct instructions to program my Ford Truck’s (HomeLink) remote control system with my Overhead Door Legacy 650 garage door opener so I wanted to capture what I did to get it to work.

Programming the HomeLink

This turned out to be very easy. See this short youtube video 2025 UPDATE: Pair Ford HomeLink to Garage Door Opener which explains it well

Step 1: Clear Memory, by pressing buttons one and three as described in video.

Step 2: Pair/Program your remote by pressing the HomeLink remote button you want to program and then a working garage door opener. Hold both buttons down until the HomeLink light becomes solid which means it’s programmed.

Now your car basically is a remote control for your garage door but you first have to tell the garage door to know about this new remote.

Adding a new remote to your Overhead Door Legacy 650 garage door opener

  1. On Legacy 650 unit, press and hold the SET/PRGM button on the opener for two seconds (then release).
    • The ROUND LED will turn BLUE.
    • The LONG LED will then flash PURPLE.
  2. Stand at least 5 feet away from opener and slowly press and release the desired button on the remote two times. I repeated this until the garage door started opening/closing.
    • The owners guide says “Both opener LEDs will flash and turn off indicating the remote has been programmed.” I never looked at the LEDs because I knew the remote had been programmed because the garage door was opening.
